The Realization: Strength Comes from Within I asked, What qualities would help you find inner peace? He thought for a moment before responding. "Resilience. That’s what keeps me balanced." I pressed further. What else? "Rest. I get energy from being around people, but I also need to unplug, reflect, and recharge. When I don’t, everything feels overwhelming." The connection was beginning to form. He was in the middle of a job search, going through multiple interviews, constantly facing situations beyond his control. The uncertainty was exhausting. But he realized that while he couldn’t control external events, he could control how he took care of himself. And that’s when the shift happened. "If I rest, I have more energy. If I have more energy, I can handle the things I can’t control." A simple but profound insight. The power of self-renewal. The Power of Introspection At the start of the session, his responses were quick, almost rehearsed—logical answers that didn’t quite reach the core of the issue. But as we went deeper, his answers slowed. He wasn’t just speaking anymore—he was reflecting. Letting ideas surface. Sitting with uncertainty instead of rushing past it. This shift from external problem-solving to deep introspection was the turning point. "You’re doing the mental push-ups now," I told him. He smiled, understanding the metaphor. At first, he had been bouncing answers back quickly, like playing a game of ping-pong. But now, coaching was becoming more like golf—taking time to consider the next move, letting the silence do some of the work. Letting Go to Find Clarity By the end of the session, my client’s energy had changed. He started the conversation searching for strategies, for something external to fix the uncertainty. But what he truly needed was to give himself permission to rest, to disconnect when needed, and to trust that energy would return. And in reflecting on his journey, he had one final takeaway: "One thing that I’ve learned is that hard work pays off." He was referring to the many interviews he had secured, the progress he had made despite uncertainty. It was a reminder that even in turbulent times, effort leads to opportunity. When we embrace uncertainty, when we stop resisting it and instead nurture ourselves through it, we find that inner peace isn’t about controlling the outside world—it’s about creating stability from within.
