Initial Challenges
"I'm really focused on making this temporary position a full-time role," he explained, a sense of urgency underlying his words. "The visa deadline is looming, and I'm not sure I have enough time to explore other options," he continued, visibly tense with the pressure of the situation. I understood his urgency, but I also sensed that his intense focus on this single path might be limiting his view of potential opportunities. It was crucial to expand his vision beyond the immediate challenge. Broadening the Horizon "What might be another way to get what you want?" I inquired, nudging him to consider a wider spectrum of possibilities. His initial reaction was thoughtful silence as he processed this question. Slowly, he started to articulate what truly mattered to him—the stability of a reputable company, a sense of purpose in his work, and the impact he could have within the organization. Recognizing these core values helped illuminate new paths he hadn’t previously considered. “What are your priorities?” I asked, steering the conversation to align his desires with actionable goals. The Realization He paused momentarily before responding with conviction, "I actually know my priorities, but I've neglected to consider the timeline." This realization sparked an "aha" moment. As we mapped his priorities onto a timeline, he began to see the sequence in which he needed to pursue his goals—what was urgent and what could wait. The concrete timeline empowered him, clarifying the steps needed to align with the visa schedule and secure future opportunities. Expanding the Vision From my coaching perspective, I employed a method I like to call "challenging fixed beliefs." His initial belief was anchored on one path to achieve his goal—maximize the advantage of his current position. But what if there were other opportunities that met his needs and ambitions just as well, if not better? We explored the idea of keeping a broader lookout for full-time positions that aligned with his aspirations, even if they required stepping temporarily away from his comfort zone. Gaining Momentum and Clarity By the end of our session, my client experienced a palpable shift. From a singular focus on his current path, he was able to generate additional momentum by considering a range of possibilities. No longer constrained by a black-and-white perspective, the options unfolded before him in a vibrant array of opportunities. "I initially thought I was doing fine without coaching," he admitted, somewhat surprised at the value he found, "but it helped me zoom out and really see the forest for the trees."
